About Instagram: The Wildlife II

Detail of "The Garden of Earthly Delights" by Hieronymus Bosch

In my last entry I explored some of the users we often come across on Instagram. This is intended to complete the list with other common characters worthy of mention.

·        The Fitness People

Yes, I belong here and I apologize. We are not sufficiently skilled to create appropriate sets of workouts for others (so at least people could benefit from our knowledge), but we are passionate about what we do. We are proud of our achievements and we upload our accomplishments: number of kms run/cycled or kg lifted, achieved yoga positions, matches we won… I know, we are annoying AF to anyone who is not on our circle. The truth is that we have created a community where we support each other so it seems unlikely we stop doing so, sorry!

      ·        The Quotists

Instagram is their channel to spread their message, they upload creative and sharp quotes but they are making use of the wrong social media. The ones who complain, rant, fight and share their anger about the injustices in the world… go to Twitter, please. The ones who preach, you have Facebook (don’t worry, nobody will challenge you there). For those who love positive inspirational quotes, LinkedIn is your place 😉.

      ·        The Intermittents

They literally uninstall the app and install it later on, uninstall it and back at it again, and so on. A constant loop. It’s not that they take a break from Instagram and stop posting for a while, they completely disappear, their accounts don’t exist anymore. Their comeback is splendid though: they are happier than ever, improved, exultant. A new them, a new start, half of their old pictures deleted. These users make me worry about their mental health. When things go fine, everything looks marvelous; when things get complicated (break ups, mid-life crisis, etc.), they vanish, and all the evidence evaporates like if nothing ever happened. Your life is not your social media life. You don’t need the approval from the social media users. You are not perfect, you make mistakes, you suffer like everybody else, and that’s ok. Stop faking.

       ·        The Mothers

Another exhausting group of instagrammers. Fortunately (or unfortunately) no father spams his feed with his children’s photos and videos. For some of these women, their existence orbits around their child and their only mission in the world is to post about it. They have no other interest in life, and they think we care.

      ·        The Spammers

They just post too much. And too frequently. Some of them have some sort of business they want to promote and we have to support them, that’s why we follow them back, share their stuff, etc. Otherwise we would have got rid of them long time ago. Others, in the other hand, upload a tremendous amount of uninteresting crap. We don’t need to know absolutely everything that they do. What’s their problem? I truly believe their lives behind the screen are so dull they need to look for something exciting somewhere else. It feels a bit rude to unfollow them, so we opt for muting theirs posts (#sorrynotsorry).

      ·        The Photographers

This is the social media that should dominate. They know how to use a camera, how to edit photos and which filters apply. Their photos are impressive, extremely beautiful and purely artistic. They usually focus on the artistry and technique rather than in themselves, but this social media, my friend, is a vanity fair, so they are not very successful either.

·        The Crafters

These are skilled people: they bake, they draw, they paint, they knit, etc. and their content is just that. If you are interested in the field, good for you. If you don’t give a fuck, well…I’d suggest them to make some profit out of their talent in other social media (and give us a break): Esty and similar shops, Pinterest, tutorials on YouTube.

      ·        The Randoms

They don’t follow any pattern or trend. They post random content at random frequencies. You don’t know what to expect from them. I wonder what they’re doing on Instagram in the first place.
